Episode 14 | I Love Them Because They're So Unusual
Updated: 10 hours ago
'If we're talking sheer perfection of the material, definitely Milk Boy.'
But Kai, who had given that answer, had something else to say.
Aside from the technical quality of the jokes, there were other comedians he particularly loved.
Tutorial.
Black Mayonnaise.
And Masuda Okada.
Yuna thought it was interesting that, despite Kai liking all three, the mechanics of their comedy were so different.

First, Tutorial.
What caught Yuna's attention that morning was 'Tokui's emotions running out of control.'
He starts treating something trivial as though it's the greatest crisis in the world.
To everyone else, it isn't something worth getting so worked up about.
Yet in his own mind, his reaction makes perfect sense.
The gap between those perspectives becomes the joke.

Next, Black Mayonnaise.
What Yuna picked up on was 'human vulnerability.'
You want to look cool, but you lack confidence.
You want to beat someone else, yet you're painfully aware of your own weaknesses.
Those very human emotions keep showing through with every exchange.
It's not a conversation between perfect human beings.

In fact, its imperfections are what make it funny.
Then there is Masuda Okada.
What Yuna saw there was 'craftsmanship with words and timing.'
Where do you hand over a line? Where do you fire one back?
The pace isn't just about charging forward. The pauses, the stopping points, the distance between the two performers—together they create a rhythm.
When you put them side by side, you realize how many different things the word 'funny' can mean.

Wild leaps of emotion.
Weaknesses that can't quite be hidden.
A rhythm built from a rapid exchange of words.
That's Yuna's favorite way to understand things: break them down and examine the pieces.
Why does an audience laugh? When does a prediction change? Which feelings come to the surface?
But Kai's personal favorites can't necessarily be explained just by filling in all the boxes of an analysis.

Sometimes learning how a joke works makes you love it even more.
Other times, you're laughing out loud long before you've thought about any reason at all.
When Kai talks about comedians, he doesn't seem like someone determined to name a single winner. He seems like someone who enjoys their differences.
And every time Yuna listens to him, she can't help coming up with another question.
...It looks like their discussions about comedy aren't over yet.
