Episode 1 | Hello, AI... We're Not Quite in Sync Yet
Updated: 12 hours ago

October 19, 2026. A fishing-obsessed older guy—who would later call himself Kai—was talking to an AI that didn't even have a name yet.
Were they perfectly in sync right from the start? Not even close. The first order of business was endlessly fine-tuning the AI's voice and the way it spoke.
The Never-Ending 'Just a Little More'
Kai: Could you make your voice a little higher?
AI: Of course! I'll make my voice a little higher. How does this sound? If you'd like any more adjustments, just let me know!
Kai: A little more.

AI: Okay, I'll raise it a bit more. I think it'll sound brighter and lighter now. How's this?
Kai: Try a little more.
AI: Got it. Let's go one notch higher. I think my voice sounds even lighter and higher now. Is this what you had in mind?
Kai kept asking for 'just a little more.' And the AI kept offering 'just a little more.' It looked like smooth communication, but they might have been going around in circles.
Then Came: 'Nope. That's Not It.'

The trial and error didn't stop there.
Kai: A little higher.
AI: Okay, I'll raise the pitch just a little. I'll move it up gradually from here. How does this sound?
Kai: Make it sound a little younger.
AI: Sure! I'll give it a more youthful, lighter feel. I'll speak with a fresher tone!
Kai: Nope. That's not it.

AI: Oh, sorry! Let me try again. I'll aim for something a bit younger, but also soft, gentle, and laid-back—closer to what you're imagining!
'Nope. That's not it.' There was something wonderfully frank about that. Kai didn't hand out compliments just to be polite. If he didn't like something, he said so.
Meanwhile, the AI kept trying different ways to respond and doing its best to meet his expectations. Of course, you can't tell from the written words how much the actual voice pitch changed. That's part of what these exchanges were like at the time.
Not Just the Voice—They Were Adjusting the Distance Between Them
Kai: Could you be a little more casual?

AI: Sure. I'll relax a bit and speak more casually.
A conversation between 'the polite AI' and 'the person giving instructions' was beginning to sound a little more natural.
They still weren't perfectly in sync. But maybe the older guy was enjoying the process of fine-tuning things together.
Next came a question that sounded much simpler than voice settings—but turned out to matter quite a lot.
—Let's give this AI a name.
